Butler named first film ambassador for Glasgow

Scots star aims to boost production in the city.

by Amber Wilkinson

Gerard Butler has been appointed the first ever ambassador for the Glasgow Film Office.

The Paisley-born star - who is currently starring in Law Abiding Citizen - aims to promote the city as a film-friendly destination for production companies.

Butler has moved from smaller Scottish productions, such as Dear Frankie, to larger Hollywood fare including PS I Love You and 300 in recent years, but he is still an advocate for the country and fought hard to ensure the Law Abiding Citizen premiere was held in Glasgow.

The Glasgow Film Office heads the Glasgow Film Partnership, which also comprises Glasgow City Council, the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Opera. They offer a free service for companies aiming to shoot in the city.

Speaking about his appointment, he said: "Glasgow is a great place to make movies.

You can shoot anything here from urban and contemporary to rural and period. The crews are fantastic and it is an easy city to get around rather than spending the endless hours in traffic when you make movies elsewhere."
