Breakthrough Brits 2009

The UK Film Council celebrates black and Asian writers, directors and stars.

by Jennie Kermode

Each year, the UK Film Council releases a list of the most impressive new talents in the industry, people to watch for 2010. This year, aiming to combat an imbalance which sees ethnic minorities massively under-represented, it is celebrating the achievements of black and Asian actors and filmmakers. The list includes Shifty star Riz Ahmed (aka hip-hop artist Riz MC) and actor/writer Daniel Kaluuya, who garnered praise for his supporting role in Cass.

"Breakthrough Brits is 100% practical and we know from experience that it makes a significant impact on the careers of diverse British talent on the cusp of international success," said film council executive John Woodward. Those on the list will be invited to special film masterclasses and networking events, as well as getting direct introductions to some of the biggest movers and shakers in the film world. Those who have benefited from the programme in the past include Noel Clarke and Emily Blunt.

Also included on this year's list are Oladipo Agboluaje, Eran Creevy, Yann Demange, Shan Khan, Tinge Krishnan, Kolton Lee, Nahrein Mirza Kemp, China Moo Young, Mel Nwanguma and How She Move screenwriter Ian Iqbal Rashid.
