Veteran British actor passes away after short illness

by Amber Wilkinson

Veteran British star Ian Carmichael OBE has died at age 89 at his home in the Esk Valley, North Yorkshire.

The actor, who fell ill over Christmas and New Year, made a name for himself in the 1950s and 1960s in films including I'm All Right Jack and School For Scoundrels.

Crossing over to television in the 1970s, the Hull-born star attracted a legion of fans in the roles of Bertie Wooster (The World Of Wooster) and as Dorothy L Sayers' detective Lord Peter Wimsey.

He continued his acting career right up until his illness, starring as TJ Middleditch in ITV drama The Royal.

He is survived by his second wife, Kate, 55, two daughters, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
