Cliff Robertson has passed away today aged 88, from natural causes, according to his secretary in New York.

A popular and bankable star in television and film in the 50s and 60s, Robertson is perhaps best known for his performance as a young John F Kennedy in the 1963 film PT-109. He also found critical acclaim in Charly, the 1968 film for which he was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Robertson was most recently seen featuring in Sam Raimi's rebooted Spider-Man series as Peter Parker's uncle, and surrogate father, Ben Parker.

Robertson's daughter Stephanie said in a statement quoted by Associated Press: "My father was a loving father, devoted friend, dedicated professional and honourable man

"He stood by his family, friends, and colleagues through good times and bad. We will all miss him terribly."
