BIFA Awards announced

Tyrannosaur stamps on competition

by Amber Wilkinson

Tyrannosaur towered over the competition at the British Independent Film Awards last night, fighting off strong competition from We Need To Talk About Kevin, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Senna and Shame.

The film - about the fledgling relationship between Peter Mullan's man with anger-management issues and Olivia Coleman's abused wife - was honoured for best film, while Coleman took home the best acting gong and Paddy Considine was named best new director.

None of the best film nominees went home empty handed, however. Lynne Ramsay took home the best director award for We Need To Talk About Kevin, while Senna was named best documentary and Michael Fassbender snagged the best actor award for his portrayal of a sex-addicted man haunted by his past in Shame. Maria Djurkovic, meanwhile, was honoured in the technical category for her production design on Tinker Tailor.

It was a night for newcomer success, with Tom Cullen taking home the newcomer prize for his finely nuanced performance as a gay man falling in love in Weekend - which also picked up the best achievement in production award - while Richard Ayoade was also honoured for his debut film script work on Submarine.

Supporting actor gongs went to Michael Smiley for his work on disturbing cult hit Kill List and veteran Vanessa Redgrave for her role in Shakespeare adaptation Coriolanus.

Raindance Film Festival and BIFA founder Elliot Grove said: “As always the Moët British Independent Film Awards has been an awesome celebration of the very best of British independent filmmaking. This year demonstrates that the international spotlight is on Britain for quality, innovation and creativity.”
