The much admired Greek director Theo Angelopoulos died last week when struck by a motorbike beside the set where he was working, it was announced today. Angelooulos, whose work include the two Hunters films and The Travelling Players, also worked as a writer and film critic. He was admired for the slow moving elegance of his work.

The director's career began late in life after a career in academia and journalismm. During this time he had developed a love of literature that informed his always thoughtful work. During the Greek military dictatorship of 1967 to 1974 his political work got him in trouble, but later he chose to focus on wider subjects. "I simply want our life to become more human," he said.

He was 76.
