Titanic sails into record books in China...

...but Kate Winslet's 3D breasts are too much for the censors.

by Jennie Kermode

Taking $11.6M on just its first day, Titanic 3D has broken box office records in China. Though it has yet to match the record takings of Avatar, it seems well on track to catch up. The combination of the 3D craze and China's longstanding love affair with historical romances makes it box office gold - but some of the censors aren't so keen.

While audiences are keen to get as much as possible from the 3D experience, China's regulator has insisted that the famous painting scene in which Kate Winslet reclines naked on a couch be re-edited. THe new version removes thoe troublesome 3D breasts, which the censors have argued could lead to over-enthusiastic fans reaching out and disrupting others' viewing experiences.

Other Chinese authorities were more positive about the film, with one university professor arguing that it is important for people to understand the importance of love in a changing society that puts too much emphasis on material wealth.
