Twilight stars change direction

Pattinson and Stewart seek more complex roles.

by Jennie Kermode

They rose to fame playing troubled lovers in hit vampire series Twilight but now both Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who have been romantically linked in real life, have stressed their desire to break away from similar roles. After it was rumoured he would be asked to star in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel, Pattinson has expressed relief that this isn't the case. Stewart is currently appearing in Snow White And The Huntsman but says she is looking forward to her role in Kerouac adaptation On The Road, which will enable her to address more adult themes.

For Pattinson, it's less a case of trying to build a serious career from scratch and more a case of trying to resurrect the reputation he had as an actor in independent films before his foray into the Twilight world. Playing a talentless but ruthless social climber in Bel Ami and now an exploitative bank executive in Cosmopolis, he hopes to shed his image as a 'safe' teen heartthrob. But some 'adult' material would be going too far - the actor who once said he would do anything for David Cronenberg has confessed that doesn't extend to exposing intimate parts of his body onscreen.

Stewart, meanwhile, says she enjoyed the challenge of filming sex scenes in On The Road. More embarrassing for her was being recognised by Twilight fans after she frst rose to fame, when she had no idea how to react.
