The Golden Globes awards ceremony took place in Los Angeles tonight, and the big winner was Richard Linklater's Boyhood, which took Best Picture (Drama), Best Director and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette) - see what its stars told us about making it. The biggest surprise was The Grand Budapest Hotel beating Birdman to win Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical, while there was also a shock as Russia's Leviathan taking Best Film not in the English Language, adding intrigue to a race that has so far been dominated by Polish film Ida.

There were some striking clothes on display, with Lupita N'yongo knocking 'em dead in an amethyst dress, Jessica Chastain looking resplendent in a dark bronze gown and Prince making a rare appearance in a brass and silver suit. Several guests sported badges with the slogan je suis Charlie, in reference to the staff of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo who were recently killed in Paris.

George Clooney, who has been nominated for Golden Globes in more categories than anybody else, received the Cecil B de Mille lifetime achievement award as the audience was treated to a montage including clips from The Men Who Stare At Goats and South Park, in which he provided the voice of a gay dog. "[If] you get to work in Hollywood, your dream came true. Everyone knows who you are. Keep it in perspective," he said, adding that what people will remember is not the award but the winner's body of work.
