Oscar hopes will be high for Birdman and for Britain's Eddie Redmayne after their victories last night at the Screen Actors' Guild Awards. Both awards have chosen the same Best Actor for the past ten years. Dedicating his award to people like Stephen Hawking who are living with motor neurone disease (also known as ALS), Redmayne said "In preparing to play Stephen I met many people fighting ALS, and I met their families fighting alongside them. And the courage and the bravery and the spirit, this triumph of spirit that I witnessed, blew my mind. So I'm incredibly grateful to them."

The SAG Awards are particularly valued by actors because they are awarded by their peers and thy re often seen as reflecting aspects of performance that other awards don't pick up on, but there were no surprises in this year's list, with every winner already having picked up one of the season's big awards.
