British stars conquer Broadway

UK actors take three quarters of Tony play acting awards.

Last night at the 69th Tony Awards held at Radio City Music Hall, British stars conquered Broadway, winning three of the four Best Play Performance categories, Best Revival of a Play and Best Play.

Nominees Bradley Cooper, Patricia Clarkson, and Alessandro Nivola with their dates (mums) for the Tony Awards. The Elephant Man stars will be flying back to London today to continue their run in the revival of Bernard Pomerance's play at the Theatre Royal Haymarket through August 8.

Simon Stephens' adaptation of Mark Haddon's mystery novel The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time won Best Play after newcomer Alex Sharp garnered Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. David Hare's Skylight, starring Carey Mulligan, Bill Nighy, and Matthew Beard took home Best Revival of a Play.

Helen Mirren, Actress in a Leading Role and Richard McCabe, Actor in a Featured Role for Peter Morgan's The Audience were honoured.

The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time also won Best Director of a Play for Marianne Elliott, Best Lighting Design of a Play for Paule Constable, and Best Scenic Design of a Play for Bunny Christie and Finn Ross.

Best Costume Design of a Play went to Christopher Oram for his work on Hilary Mantel and Mike Poulton's Wolf Hall Parts One & Two.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role winner Annaleigh Ashford for You Can't Take It With You was the lone American winner in the acting in a play categories.
