This year's awards season is packed full of surprises and the Golden Globe nominations revealed today have broadened the field even further. It's rare for anything classed as 'genre' cinema to get serious critical attention, so the Best Motion Picture and Best Director nominations for Mad Max: Fury Road have made quite an impression, despite its FIPRESCI win earlier this year. Fellow science fiction hit Ex Machina has also attracted attention with a Supporting Actress nomination for Alicia Vikander, who is in the unusual position of also being nominated for Best Actress, for The Danish Girl.

Now clearly marked out as the strongest film of the season, Todd Haynes' Carol has made further gains here, making Cate Blanchett odds-on favourite when it comes to the Oscars.
