The Big Short was named Best Film at the Producers Guild of America Awards at the weekend, a important victory for a film that initially gathered big critical attention but had so far failed to claim any awards season victories. A significant overlap between PGA voters and members of the Academy mean its Oscar hopes have now been boosted. Receiving the award, Dede Gardner acknowledged that it's a film entirely about rich white men, and addressed concerns about diversity, saying "We need to tell stories that reflect our world and our country and all streets and roads and corners."

Britain had a winner in Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy, a portrait of Amy Winehouse which has gone from humble beginnings to become a festival hit and a worldwide critical success. Meanwhile, Inside Out won in the animation category.
