La La Land wins top awards at BAFTAs

Fans are pleased by an otherwise diverse mix.

There was drama at the BAFTAs tonight as La La Land, nominated for 11 awards, spent most of the night with only one - but its dreams came true at last when it took Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress (for Emma Stone, who stole the show in a beautiful patterned silver dress). Best Actor went to Manchester By The Sea's Casey Affleck.

Ken Loach took the first award of the evening for I, Daniel Blake and defended his film against those who have accused it of exaggerating the experiences of wellfare recipients. He also took the opportunity to attack the UK government for failing to provide more support to refugees.

Fans were out in force and crowded round the red carpet outside the Royal Albert Hall to collect autographs and take selfies with obliging celebrities likeDaisy Ridley and Tom Holland. Holland went on to win the EE Rising Star Award, the only BAFTA voted for by the public, nd with so many people excited to see him there, it wasn't hard to see why.

The awards were a glamorous affair as usual. Eddie Redmayne and Andrew Garfield wowed the crowds in white jackets, Meryl Streep made an impact in a stylish black trouser suit, and there were some very striking dresses. Thandie Newton and Penelope Cruz look resplendent in long black gowns, while Viola Davis is stunning in electric blue. There were also some proud parents on the red carpet, with Andrew Garfield bringing both of his and Riz Ahmed bringing his mum.
