Rumours have been circulating for a long time that Disney was planning something special for its Star Wars theme park attractions. Yesterday, at the Disney fan club D23 expo, the entertainment giant announced that this will involve the creation of a fully immersive new world, called Galaxy's Edge.

Not a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, but Florida and California in the near future, this new world will give fans the chance to claim galactic citizenship and stay in a hotel which is a functioning part of the Star Wars universe. They can drink in the cantina and listen to music supplied by former Star Tours pilot Rex, and they can see and interact with characters like Chewbacca, BB8 and Kylo Ren.

Interaction won't be limited to the traditional Disney meet and greet. Instead, visitors to the park will have the option of signing up for missions which involve the park's flagship rides - working as crew on the Millennium Falcon or fighting off AT-ATs. Those who do a good job will be rewarded with credits they can spend in the area, but beware - bad behaviour could lead to pursuit by bounty hunters, even outside the Star Wars zone.

Galaxy's Edge is set to open in 2019.
