Tom Cruise was injured yesterday when a stunt he was filming for Mission: Impossible 6 went wrong. Footage of the incident, obtained by TMZ, shows the 55 year old actor rigged up for a scene in which he jumps from one building to the roof of another. Too low down as he reaches the second building, he hits the side of it, taking the impact against his chest and legs.

The severity of Cruise's injuries is not yet known. Though clearly in pain and limping hard, he was able to move back across the space to the platform on the first building, where he received assistance.

Cruise is unusual in doing almost all his own stunts, something producers discourage because it can dramatically increase the insurance needed for a film - if a star is badly hurt, a whole project may need to be scrapped. Cruise appears to find stunt work a key part of the appeal of making action films and is known for taking risks. Compared to some of the work he has done, such as clinging to a moving plane in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, yesterday's stunt should have been relatively safe.
