The actor and stunt performer Verne Troyer has died, it was announced today. The popular star of the Austin Powers films was 49. He had struggled with alcoholism in the past and had recently been suffering from profound depression.

"Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible. Verne hoped he made a positive change with the platform he had and worked towards spreading that message everyday," reads the statement issued on behalf of his family.

"Vernon was the consummate professional and a beacon of positivity for those of us who had the honour of working with him," said his co-star Mike Myers. "It is a sad day, but I hope he is in a better place. He will be sadly missed."

Troyer's other work included appearances in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, Men In Black, Volcano, The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.
