A retrospective of Basque Country films will screen in Glasgow and Edinburgh this month. The festival, organised by Cinemaattic, will feature Amama: When A Tree Falls, alongside a series of short film showcases.

Kimuak: Films from Basque Country runs from 24-26 May at Summerhall and Edinburgh College in Edinburgh and 30-31 May at CCA Glasgow.

Basque cinema has been gaining in strength in recent years, thanks to the Basque Government support for short films through public agency Kimuak ("Sprout" in Basque) alongside festivals like San Sebastian, which has a section dedicated to cinema from its home region and champions films in the language elsewhere in its programme.

Amama director Asier Altuna will be among the filmmakers in attendance, along with animator Isabel Herguera. Txema Muñoz, the director of the Kimuak program, will also attend.

Cinemaattic’s artistic co-ordinator Alberto Valverde said: ‘Kimuak is a pioneer initiative not just in Spain but in Europe. We think the Basque case could be extremely useful for Scottish filmmakers and Scotland’s film organisations, so we have carefully organised a range of talks and learning events to understand the Basque case better and of course, on top of that, a range of excellent screenings to showcase Kimuak’s award-winning short films.’
