Benedict Cumberbatch, who recently thrilled fans in Avengers: Infinity War, has been hailed as a real life hero after saving a Deliveroo delivery cyclist from a violent mugging.

The incident took place on London's Marylebone Road where Cumberbatch was on his way to a club in an Uber cab when he saw four men attacking the cyclist. According to reports, he immediately leapt out of the vehicle and shouted at the men to leave their victim alone. With the help of the driver, Manuel Dias, he pulled the men off the injured cyclist. After he successfully fended off their blows, they fled.

The cyclist had no serious injuries and did not need hospital treatment. He got a hug from the star when the incident was over. Police investigated but, at the time of writing, no arrests have been made. It is believed that the attackers had been trying to steal the cyclist's bike.

Dias described Cumberbatch as a superhero, but the star said he was simply doing what he had to do.

The actor joins a select list of real life film star heroes, including Tom Hardy, who chased down motorbike thieves, and Jamie Foxx, who saved a man from a burning truck.
