It's well known that women are under-represented in most parts of the film industry, but in some areas the imbalance is shocking. At present, only 4% of films and television programmes made in the US have female cinematographers. The American Film Institute (AFI) today revealed that it is launching two new scholarships aimed at helping to change this.

The AFI Cinematography Introductory Intensive for Women, sponsored by 20th Century Fox, will take place in Los Angeles and introduce women to the basics of visual storytelling. The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) will provide support for it through their ASC Vision Committee.

The Fox DP Lab will help 10 to 15 recently graduated female cinematographers from the AFI Conservatory to find jobs in the industry and help them network to develop their careers.

"This new initiative to grow and develop female DPs is a natural extension of our ongoing efforts to diversify and strengthen the talent pool in this vital creative discipline," said Fox CEO and Chair Stacey Snider.

This year, Rachel Morrison became the first female cinematographer ever to be nominated for an Oscar, for Mudbound.

The applications process opens today.
