Alfonso Cuarón’s autobiographical film Roma has been named Best Picture in the Online Film Critics Society annual awards, alongside a clutch of other awards. It beat off strong competition from the likes of Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite, which had led the field with the most nominations.

The black and white film, which tracks the year in the life of a maid in a Mexican middle-class family was also named Best Film Not in The English Language and saw Cuarón named Best Director and Best Cinematographer.

Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk won three awards - Bets Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Regina King and Best Score for Nicholas Britell. Meanwhile Ari Aster picked up the Best Debut film award for Hereditary.

The main acting awards went to Ethan Hawke for his role as a troubled priest in Paul Schrader's First Reformed and Toni Colette for her portrayal of a grieving and disturbed mother in Hereditary, while Michael B Jordan was named Best Supporting Actor for the role of Erik Killmonger Marvel Comics adaptation Black Panther.

The OFCS, which has a global membership of 283 critics, also gave five Lifetime Achievement Awards to cinematographer Roger Deakins, Blakkklansman director Spike Lee, French filmmaker Agnès Varda, Robert Redford - who said The Old Man & The Gun will be his final film as an actor - and Puerta Rican star Rita Moreno.
