Machete star Danny Trejo came to the rescue yesterday when a child was trapped in an upside-down car following a crash in the Sylmar district of Los Angeles. Together with another bystander, since identified as Monica Jackson, the 75-year-old actor crawled into the wreckage and managed to free the boy, who had been saved by his secure seat.

As he carried him to safety, Trejo said that he realised the boy had special needs so he shielded him from sight of the crash and managed to keep him calm by talking to him about superpowers until his grandmother could be cut free by firefighters.

According to Trejo, the accident occurred when the other driver ran a red light, but police have yet to confirm or deny this. Three people involved in the crash were subsequently taken to hospital but none have serious injuries.

Trejo joins an elite club of Hollywood heroes along with Jamie Foxx, who pulled a man from a burning truck in 2016, and Benedict Cumberbatch, who saved a cyclist from four attackers last year.
