The Irishman, described by director Martin Scorsese as an effort to deal with "the nature of who we are as human beings," has won Best Film at this year's New York Critics' Circle awards, announced today. It debuted at the New York Film Festival and today also received a Best Supporting Actor award for Joe Pesci.

The Best Director award was shared by Benny and Josh Safdie for Uncut Gems and Quentin Tarantino won Best Screenplay for Once Upon A Time ... In Hollywood

Best actor went to Antonio Banderas for Pain And Glory, while Lupita Nyong'o was named Best Actress for her dual role in Us. Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Marriage Story and Little Women.

"This year has felt more unpredictable than most in terms of what our members have championed," said NYFCC chair Alison Willmore. "I'm thrilled that we ended up with such a varied array of choices, and that we managed to do so with minimal fisticuffs."
