1917 was the big winner at last night's BAFTAS, taking home seven awards including Best Director for Sam Mendes and Best Cinematography for the legendary Roger Deakins..

Joaquin Phoenix, taking the Best Actor award for Joker, spoke of his disappointment at the lack of racial diversity among this year's nominees, saying "I think that we send a very clear message to people of colour that you're not welcome here... We have to do really the hard work to truly understand systemic racism. I think it is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it. So that's on us" He was subsequently thanked by The Farewell director Lulu Wang for the "long, uncomfortable silence" that his remarks were followed by.

Best Documentary went to For Sama and young Sama herself was there with hr parents to collect the awards, though most of what she wanted to do was run around and shout, to the delight of filmgoers who had seen the trauma that the family went through in the film.

Andy Serkis arrived on crutches to receive a special award for Outstanding British contribution to cinema. He was recent injured while skiing but seemed to be in good spirits.
