Tributes pour in for comic, writer and director

by Amber Wilkinson

Tributes poured in last night after it was announced that Carl Reiner had died of natural causes yesterday evening, aged 98.

Reiner was a writer, producer, director and actor, who directed films including The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains, starring Steve Martin, and All Of Me, with Peter Sellers and Lily Tomlin.

His son Rob Reiner led the tributes, writing on Twitter: “Last night my dad passed away. As I write this my heart is hurting. He was my guiding light.”

His granddaughter Romy - Rob's daughter - tweeted a photo of her grandad, saying: "Took this in 2014. All I know is that he desperately wanted to vote trump out, so whatever you do, PLEASE VOTE."

Reiner had a prolific career full of comedy highlights, he was instrumental in the creation of The Dick Van Dyke Show and frequently partnered up for a double-act with fellow comedy legend Mel Brooks on a series of 2000 Year Old Man sketches. He also acted regularly, appearing in films including Ocean's Eleven and its sequels.

Stars who paid tribute included William Shatner, Rosanna Arquette and Albert Brooks, who wrote: "RIP Carl Reiner. Growing up Carl was like a second dad to me. He was the greatest. Not just as a comic legend but as a man. There was no one else this funny and this nice. I loved him."

Estelle, Reiner's wife of 64 years, died in 2008.
