Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman has been a surprise success in this year's Golden Globes nominations, a contender for Best Picture - Drama and Best Director despite being a first feature and proving controversial on the festival circuit. Fennell is one of three women to receive nominations for Best Director, a category which has been criticised for being almost exclusively male throughout the lengthy history of the awards, which are seen as the most important ones in the industry apart from the Oscars.

Other films doing well include Mank, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. In a year which has seen critics, like audiences, approaching films in a very different way from usual, these are now clear contenders for the biggest awards of them all.
