Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao and Sarah Gavron's Rocks led the charge in the BAFTAs today as the film shortlist was announced, with seven nominations each.

The Father, Mank, Minari and Promising Young Woman also made a strong showing with six nominations apiece.

This year the awards body instituted a long list system in a bid to increase the diversity of its nominees, after last year's selection drew criticism for its all-white acting categories and a lack of female directors. It seemed to pay off with more diversity notable in almost all categories, including four women directors in the Best Director shortlist.

The acting categories also showed considerably more diversity than last year, with films not in the English language also making their presence felt across the board.
