Film at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art’s 50th New Directors/New Films to include a retrospective with free virtual screenings of Chantal Akerman’s Les Rendez-vous d’Anna; Sara Driver’s Sleepwalk; Christopher Nolan’s Following; Eduardo Coutinho’s Twenty Years Later; Horace Ové’s Playing Away; Charles Burnett’s My Brother’s Wedding; Gregg Araki’s The Living End; Humberto Solás’s Lucía; Mani Kaul’s Duvidha; Lee Chang-dong’s Peppermint Candy, and Wim Wenders’ adaptation of Peter Handke’s The Goalie's Anxiety At The Penalty Kick.

Amalia Ulman’s El Planeta (Spain) will open the festival and Theo Anthony’s All Light, Everywhere (USA) is the closing night selection. The 50th anniversary edition of ND/NF has 27 features and 11 shorts available nationwide in FLC and MoMA’s virtual cinemas and in-person screenings at Lincoln Center.
Florence Almozini, Film at Lincoln Center Senior Programmer at Large and 2021 New Directors/New Films Co-Chair states: “We’re delighted to finally return to our cinemas with this landmark edition of New Directors/New Films. There’s something so special about walking into a theatre, not knowing what to expect, and discovering your new favourite filmmaker on the big screen. For 50 years, ND/NF has not only launched careers; it’s also, time and again, given audiences that singular, cinematic experience of unearthing something new.”
La Frances Hui, Curator of Film at The Museum of Modern Art and 2021 New Directors/New Films Co-Chair notes: “From intimate, personal tales to political, metaphysical, and spiritual inquiries, the films in the 50th edition of New Directors/New Films embody an inexhaustible curiosity and a fearless desire for adventure. They prove that cinema will continue to illuminate and inspire the way we live, and make art.”
The 2021 feature committee comprises Florence Almozini (Co-Chair, FLC), La Frances Hui (Co-Chair, MoMA), Rajendra Roy (MoMA), Josh Siegel (MoMA), Dan Sullivan (FLC), and Tyler Wilson (FLC), and the shorts were programmed by Brittany Shaw (MoMA) and Madeline Whittle (FLC).
New Directors/New Films at 50: A Retrospective runs free virtually from April 16 through April 28.
The 50th anniversary edition of New Directors/New Films runs from April 28 through May 8 with the in-person screenings at Lincoln Center extended to May 13.
