Alec Baldwin fired prop gun that killed DoP on set, authorities say

Director also injured in incident on Rust shoot

by Amber Wilkinson

A female cinematographer has died after actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on the film set of Rust, authorities in New Mexico have reported. Director Joel Souza was also injured in the incident on Thursday.

A statement from the Santa Fe Sheriff’s office said Halyna Hutchins, 42, was transported by helicopter from the Bonanza Creek ranch, near Santa Fe, to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. Souza, 48, was last night undergoing hospital treatment for his injuries. Baldwin, who is also producing the western, has spoken to detectives.

Last night, Adam Egypt Mortimer, who worked with Hutchins on Archenemy tweeted: "I'm so sad about losing Halyna. And so infuriated that this could happen on a set."

No one was arrested in the incident, and no charges have been filed. Police said the investigation "remains open and active".
