The actor Tony Todd has died, aged 69, after many years of illness, it was announced today. Widely admired for his versatility yet often cast for his deep, resonant voice, he was a popular member of the genre community who enjoyed attending events and meeting fans.
Perhaps most widely known for his iconic performance in Candyman, Todd appeared in numerous horror films, including the Final Destination series, Wishmaster, Hatchet, The Crow, Hell Fest and The Final Wish. He also made an impression in more mainstream far, however, such as Platoon, Le Secret and The Rock.
On the small screen, he endeared himself to fans as Klingon character Kurn in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as making appearances in Scooby-Doo and Xena: Warrior Princess. His voice work included being the voice of Darkseid in various DC projects and the Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Todd also had a secondary career voicing video game characters, contributing to two Star Trek games as well as the Half Life series and the popular Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
Todd is survived by his two children. "Everyone who met him will always remember his kindness and that incredible voice," said horror filmmakers the Soska sisters.
