The first big awards event of the season was held in New York last night, with Aaron Schimberg's transformative tale A Different Man taking top prize. Sing Sing and Nickel Boys each won two awards, putting them in good position for the race to come. There was a special tribute award for Angelina Jolie for her performance as opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s upcoming film Maria.
Zendaya received the Spotlight Tribute for her work in Luca Guadagnino's tennis-themed Challengers, while Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold received the Visionary Tribute for their collaboration on Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. Denis Villeneuve received The Gotham Director Tribute for Dune: Part Two, and the Ensemble Tribute went to the cast of The Piano Lesson, including Samuel L Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Potts, Corey Hawkins, and Erykah Badu.

- Breakthrough Performer was Brandon Wilson in Nickel Boys
