Just two days after it triumphed at the European Film Awards, Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez has emerged as the front runner in this year's Golden Globes. The film, which deals with a cartel boss' efforts to begin a new life after gender transition, received ten nominations from a select group of international judges, establishing a clear lead over its closest competitor, The Brutalist, which got seven. Conclave received six and Anora and The Substance got five. The writer/director of the latter, Coralie Fargeat, was one of few women to get attention outside the acting categories in an awards race often noted for its failure to keep up with the progress of its competitors.
The awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, 5 January.
