A Quiet Night
Reviewed by: Angus Wolfe Murray
A depressed taxi driver in New Zealand, with six kids, working the night shift, becomes the target of an exceptionally nasty gangster (Scott Willis).
None of this is his fault. A wounded man dies in his cab, leaving a bag of money. His murderer comes after him to revieve it. What can the cabbie do? The loot might solve his financial troubles, but would he live long enough to enjoy it?
The film is shot in the style of film noir, violent and gritty, but allows the tension to seep away, due to the protagonist's state of mind. Neither a hero, nor an anti-hero, Stephen Hall plays him as a victim of circumstance, rather than a sharp-thinking opportunist with the courage of his great good fortune.
