Alma

Charming animation. A sweet little girl playing in the snow. A magical toyshop. As Alma begins, you might think you're watching a delightful children's fairytale. But this is a fairytale of the old kind, and if you have any sensitivity at all, you'll be shivering as the snow drifts down at the end.

Rodrigo Blaas is a Pixar animator and Alma has that distinctive Pixar style, further entrenching the false sense of security - strictly speaking, there's nothing inappropriate here for younger viewers, but you may well find they have nightmares afterwards.

It's splendidly put together with a score by Nacho Mastretta that blends lightness and whimsicality with darker notes reminiscent of Badalamenti's bleaker work.

Short and sweet, Alma will take you a long time to forget.
