Miguel Gomes' trilogy explores the Portuguese economic crisis in he style of the 1,001 Nights, mixing observations on capitalism, society and storytelling. It's split into three parts:-

Arabian Nights: Volume 1 - The Restless One - A group of men seeking simulation take a gamble too far, a cockerel's frantic warnings go unheeded, a jilted girl becomes a firestarter and shipbuilders undertake a desperate strike.

Arabian Nights: Volume 2 - The Desolate One - The people fall into poverty, a judge struggles to find anyone innocent, and a sweet little dog with a memory like a sieve brings joy to the desperate.

Arabian Nights: Volume 3 - The Enchanted One - Scheherazade bemoans her fate, we explore her limitations and inspirations, and we meet the trappers who teach caged chaffinches to sing recorded songs.
