As One
Reviewed by: Jennie Kermode
In a series of mysterious rooms, curves and crystals and needle-like shapes evolve into ever more complex forms, inviting us to explore bizarre interiors and the contours of empty space. By simply observing these fantastic forms and carrying us on a journey through them, animator Makoto Yabuki invites us to think afresh about the shapes we take for granted in everyday life.
It's a bold idea, and Yabuki certainly has the imagination to carry it off. Unfortunately he doesn't have the technical skill. Though his vision is enchanting when unfolding seamlessly, there are too many points when misjudged perspective and the use of overfamiliar filters snap the viewer out of it. The effect is like watching an ambitious ballet in which the dancers occasionally stumble - it's potentially awe inspiring but actually frustrating. Still, Yabuki has obvious talent, so it is to be hoped that he can explore these ideas more successfully in future.
