Writer/director Bouli Lanners also stars in this film about a car dealer who loves classic motors. (notice I've avoided the repetition of the word 'car'). One evening, after arriving home from work, he stumbles across an inept young burglar called Elie (Fabrice Adde) who is hiding under his bed.
Convinced Elie is stealing to pay for a drug habit, Yvan takes pity on him and ends up befriending him. For some reason, Yvan agrees to drive his new buffoon buddy to his parents' house across Belgium and towards the French border.
During the trip in Yvan's 1979 Chevy, they bond, encounter interesting folk and find themselves in various madcap scenarios.
Eldorado is boldy photographed and stylishly scored with a European quirkiness, while Lanners' script is witty and moves at a steady pace.
In classic road-trip fashion, Eldorado features two characters who are going nowhere at the start of their journey. However, en route, they discover lots about life, each other and the world around them. It is a passable pleasure. While not a classic discovery that will win awards, it may well build up a small following with its loveable loser leads, brainless banter and warm appeal.
