Hannah Montana And Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert Tour

In a parallel universe, not far from our own live the Little People. With a love of all things pink and fluffy, they dream of shaking off their eight-year-old lives of drudgery at the hands of the education system to become popstars – just like their hero Hannah Montana, who along with her alter ego Miley (played by Miley Cyrus), gets down with the kids in this 3D pop concert.

If U2 3D was firmly aimed at the Dad end of the rock market, then this is the ying to its yang. And, to be honest, I think there’s a part of me that would rather watch candy-floss pop than Bono’s rock god posturing.

For those not in the know, Miley is just an average teen by day, but – thanks, it seems, to little more than a blonde wig – she becomes pop goddess Hannah at night, concealing this secret stardom from all but a few in the know. After two seasons on the Disney Channel, the pop princess has moved into the movies.

The end result really isn’t all that bad. This is pop concert footage intercut with preparations for the gig and snippets about Miley Cyrus – daughter of Achy Breaky Billy Ray. Transporting the central premise of the TV show – ordinary girl v pop star – to the stage, the first half of the concert is sung as Hannah Montana and the second by regular Miley. Nestling at the centre are a couple of tracks by the Jonas Brothers, who bring a decent amount of fun to proceedings.

The concert footage – beefed up quite considerably by the use of 3D – is high energy stuff, with crane cameras giving the whole thing a spring in its step to match the Duracell-bunny like Miley. The songs are firmly in the Disney traditional ‘to thine own self be true’ mode - I Got Nerve and Nobody’s Perfect (though, of course, she pretty much is) being typical examples. And, parents of younger fans will be pleased to note that although there’s lots of jumping about and running around plus enough lipgloss to paint the Forth Bridge, there is not so much as a hint of raunch and clothes are fun and funky rather than revealing.

The backstage sections – in regular old 2D – are interesting to a point, but there’s a bit too much navel gazing and they lack the fizz and sparkle of the stage numbers, putting the brakes on the pace. That said, Miley seems like a pleasant enough sort and, unlike some young popstrels you could mention, appears to have her head screwed on pretty tightly. More concerning for adults may be the condition of their eardrums by time the credits roll, I’m sure the high-pitched squealing of the audience caused several dogs in the vicinity of our cinema to keel over. The target audience, however, will doubtless lap it up.
