The director of Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead, has abandoned his anarchic originality in favour of servicing formula Hollywood product.
Freeman has a presence that's a bonus to any film. He's a different kind of detective to the one in Seven, more handson, less academic, working with the local cops - two of whom are played by British actors Brian Cox and Cary Elwes - making them look slow and ineffectual. The tension is muted by disbelief.
The bad guy - Casanova - wants a harem of malleable slaves. He won't achieve such a thing by locking girls up in underground cells without toilet facilities or decent grub. Perhaps that's part of the power trip. Make them feel so lonely and scared, they'll love him for letting them live. The ones that died couldn't fake it. Is the movie a metaphor for sexual relations in the Nineties?
