Eye For Film >> Movies >> L'Homme De Ma Vie (1992) Film Review
L'Homme De Ma Vie is, unsurprisingly, at tale of Aimee (Maria de Medeiros), looking for the man of her dreams. When Maurice (Thierry Fortineau) is introduced as a male lead character, it doesn't take Alfred Einstein to figure out what's going to happen.
On a better day, L'Homme De Ma Vie might be called a charming romantic comedy, but today it comes across as tepid and predictable. The characters are so insipid and simplistic that one can't relate to them or care enough about their fate. The plot is so written in stone from the first scene that one could skip straight to the last five minutes and still get as much from the film.
The acting isn't terrible, with the two leads doing the best they can with a largely uninspiring script. The supporting cast are largely forgettable, but aren't ever called upon to step beyond this.
There's no romance, there's no passion. If you'll forgive the stereotype, it should be more French, damnit. All the other cracks could be papered over if there was a believable portrayal of love. There isn't, and the film suffers horribly because of it.
Ultimately, the film is a damp squib. If it struck the right note at any stage, it could have been light-hearted and fun. Unfortunately, it's all just a big disappointment.
