Lola and Bilidikid
Reviewed by: Angus Wolfe Murray
On one level, this is a shy boy's coming out party. On another, it touches upon fascist undercurrents amongst German youth.
In Berlin's Turkish gay scene, Bili is a small-time pimp, who wants to marry transvestite Lola, if only he would agree to the operation. Lola's 17-year-old brother, Murat, is bullied at school for his effeminate nature, while his elder brother, Osman, pays a prostitute "to make him a man."
Kutlug Ataman's deeply depressing tale of an immigrant subculture, where sex-of-a-sort is sold in public lavatories and racist teenagers go gay bashing with bottles, has melodramatic overtones, as well as sociological pretensions.
