Sauna Tango

It might not seem that the tango belongs in a sauna, but Vera Lalyko's film suggests that it might. Beautifully animated, with crisp character design and a sumptous single background, it's visually splendid.
Kai Struwe's music is well integrated with the action, Dabrowka Kolodziejski's dialogue is an amusing impenetrable Polish-ish squawk, but it is the movement of the immaculately coiffured dancing masseuse that compels.
Visceral bone-cracking, touching confidence-instilling, the bitter cleaning-lady and a mop-based serenade all entertain. Thomas Müller and Matthias von Lonski both contribute good design work, and as it's a group effort it's nice to see touches like a list of production babies in the credits.
A toonsisters production, this digitally created animation is amusing, entertaining, and technically excellent. The steam bath setting intrigues, and while audiences should look forward to more of Lalyko's work it might also be nice to see more of the musical masseuse and his colleagues.
