The Best Comedy DVD In The World

I larfed and larfed but perhaps I should begin by saying that even if I hadn't liked this DVD you should still go out and buy it. After all, comedy is very subjective. What makes me laugh may not raise a smile in your home and vice versa.

But whether this makes you laugh or not you can be cheered by the thought that an average £8 out of every £9.99 disc bought will go straight to Unicef, helping them make a difference to the many children affected by the devastating tsunami earlier this year.

And the news on the comedy front is good, for, while possibly not quite the best comedy DVD in the world, as the title suggests, it is certainly a welcome diversion from the snow last week and offers something for everyone.

The DVD comprises clips from the Sixties through to the present, from small screen gems to classic movie moments.

Highlights include David Brent's "dance" from The Office - which recently topped a poll of the nation's favourite comedy moments - the battle with the Black Knight from Monty Python And The Holy Grail and the Springtime For Hitler song-and-dance number from The Producers.

Some of the inclusions seem a slightly odd choice, such as the brief snippet from Carry On Camping, possibly the least funny moment from Withnail & I and a very surreal excerpt from Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's The Very Best of Goodbye Again, but I guess when you're making a charity DVD you accept all comers.

It is fair to say, however, that the compilers have generally managed to find some little treasures that you'll be quoting long after the credits roll. As Mrs Doyle would say - and does, in fact, on this DVD - "Gwan, gwan, gwan, gwan."
