One of the few American films by director Max Ophuls, The Exile was written by its star Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. as a homage to his swashbuckling father. The plot follows exiled Charles II in Holland and his encounters with Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads - an otherwise unremarkable star-vehicle boasting Ophuls' unique brand of visual invention and sentimentality.
