A Family Portrait
Reviewed by: Andrew Robertson
"Taking family portraits isn't my speciality... it's my forte". In this rotoscoped domestic drama, there are hints of at least one affair, grotesqueries rendered visible, paranoias too. It appears hand drawn, on high quality paper, but the technique doesn't matter - what's on display is ingenious, convincing, and powerful. By eliminating the little details it elevates those it shows to tremendous significance. The ridiculous elements of a modern family photo, the jumping, the pillow-fights, even the word 'cheese' - all are jumping off points. Writer/Director Joseph Pierce has taken something that might seem mundane and made it special.
