Eye For Film >> Movies >> Death Watch (1980) Blu-Ray Review
This release of Death Watch on Bluray by Park Circus, after the film's re-release in the cinema over the summer, is a welcome edition to their expanding range of classic films. The film looks great in this format, with the widescreen Glasgow city-scape rendered in sharp detail. It's not only the landscape that looks great, but even the craggy features of Harry Dean Stanton's unmistakable face look as good as they would have on the big screen.
In terms of extras, the only one of real note here is a recent interview with director Bertrand Tavernier. Monsieur Tavernier is a fascinating subject, discussing freely and open-heartedly his film, and also the specifics of shooting here in the UK. He says that shooting in Glasgow was one of the "happiest experiences of his life", and discusses with obvious enthusiasm his love for the city and it's crumbling, yet cinematic, exteriors.
The behind-the-scenes stills give an insight into some of the production aspects of the film, but are of no more than a passing interest. As always with photo-galleries as extras on a DVD, they can only seem markedly inferior to watching a filmed featurette.
