New York Film Festival line-up announced

Wild Grass to open in the Big Apple.

by Jennie Kermode

After much speculation, the organisers of the New York Film Festival have announced this year's line-up, and it's one which is notably heavy on European films. Unusually, some of those films, like Pedro Almodovar's Broken Embraces, will already have opened in UK cinemas before they reach the festival audience.

Opening this year's event, on 25 September, will be Wild Grass, the new film from [film]Hiroshima Mon Amour[/film] director Alain Resnais. Michael Haneke's [film]The White Ribbon[/film], which won praise at Cannes, will also be showing, alongside Lars Von Trier's Antichrist, which divided critics and audiences alike. Catherine Breillat's Bluebeard explores the life of that legendary figure in the context of modern serial killer mythology, while Marco Bellocchio's Vincere explores the fascist reworking of history through the life story of Mussolini's illegitimate son. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to see the restored version of 1939 classic [film]The Wizard Of Oz[/film].
