Tom Hardy steering for the Croisette in Mad Max Fury Road |
Filmmaker George Miller gears up for another post-apocalyptic action adventure with Fury Road, the fourth outing in the Mad Max series which will have a special out of competition slot at the Cannes Film Festival.
The screening on Thursday 14 May at the Grand Théâtre Lumière marks return after a gap of 30 years for the hero of the legendary saga, this time played by Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) taking over from Mel Gibson. The rest of the cast includes Charlize Theron, Megan Gale, John Howard and Nathan Jones.
It is set in the furthest reaches of the planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken and almost everyone is crazed and fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order – Max, a man of action and few words, and Furiosa (played by Theron), who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
Miller launched the series in 1979 before filming Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985).
The film, the fourth in the franchise, will go on release worldwide following its Cannes preview.
