Eye For Film >> Movies >> Bee Movie (2007) Film Review
Barry B Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) has just graduated after three days at bee college - including one gap day, where he travelled the hive finding himself. With a lifetime of work ahead of him, he wonders if there isn't more to life. Barry soon finds himself outside the hive and making friends with a human called Vanessa (Renee Zellweger).
Bee Movie fits comfortably into the tradition of large-scale computer-animated cartoons, such as Toy Story, Shrek, Antz, and Monsters Inc. You know exactly what you're getting, but that's no bad thing. Bee Movie is lots of fun, oozes charm and every single scene looks beautiful. Whack it in the DVD player, and one hour and 30 minutes later, you'll have a big, silly grin on your face.
There's plenty in Bee Movie for people of all ages. Sure, the youngest children won't fully appreciate the Sting and Ray Liotta cameos, but they'll get the gist of it. Barry's a loveable character, as is his best friend Adam (Matthew Broderick). Vanessa's angry boyfriend, Ken (Patrick Warburton) is big, brash and silly. It's all very predictable, but it's fun to be along for the ride.
Bee Movie is very formulaic. It's all been seen before and done before, but this doesn't detract from the audience's enjoyment. Yes, it would be nice if it offered something fresh and new, but the same and good is better than different and bad.
Lots of fun. Highly recommended.
