Pixar's Up to open Cannes

3D feature the first-ever animation to open the festival.

by Amber Wilkinson

Cannes Film Festival have announced that Disney Pixar's 3D animation Up will open its 62nd edition on May 13.

The decision marks the first time that an animated or 3D film has opened the festival since it's inauguration and comes just months after Sundance Film Festival also opted for an animated feature - Mary And Max - as its opening gala.

The film, directed by Monster's Inc helmer Peter Docter, sees 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen embark on adventure after he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But on arrival, Carl - voice by veteran actor Ed Asner - discovers he has brought his worst nightmare with him - a nine-year-old Wilderness Explorer stowaway.

Up will screen out of competition at Cannes and is set for release in the UK on October 16 and in the US on May 29.
